Inside the Beautiful Mind: How Barkha ‘n’ Sonzal Are Redefining Menswear with Purpose

In the ever-evolving world of fashion, few designers manage to intertwine artistry with advocacy as seamlessly as Barkha Sharma and Sonzal. Their debut at Lakmé Fashion Week in 2013 with the menswear collection “Beautiful Mind” was a testament to this unique blend, capturing the complexities of human consciousness through innovative design.

A Journey through the Mind

“Beautiful Mind” wasn’t just a collection; it was a narrative. Drawing inspiration from the metamorphosis of the human psyche—from innocence to chaos, darkness to light—the sisters crafted garments that mirrored these transitions. The collection featured a range of jackets, trousers, and bandhgalas, characterized by youthful cuts and vibrant hues. Colors like citrus green, shocking yellow, and retro blue symbolized various stages of mental evolution, aiming to reflect the inner battles and eventual enlightenment of the soul.

 The Minds behind the Designs

Barkha Sharma, the elder of the duo, brings a rich tapestry of experiences to the label. A graduate with a B.Sc from Purdue University, she further honed her business acumen at Wharton and Harvard. Her journey took a creative turn when she delved into classical dance forms like Mohiniattam and Kalaripayattu, and studied various tribal arts across continents. This diverse background infuses her designs with a deep cultural resonance.

Sonzal complements this with her formal education in fashion design from the London College of Fashion and makeup artistry from Central St. Martins. Her exposure to global fashion scenes and her stint under designer Arjun Khanna have equipped her with a keen eye for detail and innovation.

Fashion with a Purpose

Beyond aesthetics, Barkha and Sonzal are committed to social causes. During their Lakmé Fashion Week showcase, they highlighted the Baby Wrap Project for Impact India, addressing the critical issue of neonatal hypothermia in tribal regions. By encouraging donations and the stitching of baby blankets, they aimed to make a tangible difference in the lives of new-borns.

A Legacy of Innovation

Since their impactful debut, Barkha ‘n’ Sonzal have continued to push boundaries in menswear fashion. Their collections, such as “Rock Prince” and “Dance of the Warrior,” reflect a fusion of traditional Indian motifs with contemporary design elements. Their commitment to sustainability, cultural preservation, and social responsibility sets them apart in the fashion industry.

In a world where fashion often prioritizes form over substance, Barkha and Sonzal stand out as designers who weave stories, cultures, and causes into every stitch, redefining what it means to be truly fashionable.
